The family society was founded
in August 1978
in the lake district of Finland,
Padasjoki Parish.
The primary roots
of
this family are found in the island of Virmaila
situated in the southern part
of Lake
Päijänne.
Everyone, who descends from
the rider, 'The Hakkapelita'
Henric Wirmala, son of Peter
(born about 1585),
can join as a member of the
family society,
spouses are also welcome.
The purpose of the society is to cherish the family
traditions,
to promote
the feeling of togetherness
between the members of the family around
the world
and to honour the memory of past generations.
The society proposes to pursue its aims by arranging
meetings,
where members can get to know each other,
to study the
family's history and to bringing the results of
new genealogical research to the attention
of members of the family.
The family magazine Virmailan Uutiset,
'News of Wirmala'
is published every year in July.
The annual meeting and events are traditionally
held
on the first Sunday of August in Padasjoki,
or in some other place, that is significant to
the family.
The actual family celebration is arranged
in connection with the annual meeting every 4-5
years.
Pedigree genealogies are published with
help from family members.
