Saimaa
is the biggest lake in Finland and the fourth largest in Europe, stretching
from Varkaus in the west to Joensuu in the east. It’s surface area is
1,700 km2 and it has 13,700 km of shoreline. The excellent canal systems
have turned the southern Vuoksi waterway into one massive boating area,
taking one as far north as Iisalmi via Kuopio; or east via the River
Pielisjoki route to Lieksa, Juuka and Nurmes. Saimaa has about 3,000
km of marked water routes and over 70 boating harbours. |
