Instructions to setup your
system
- First make sure that you Windows system has fully operational
Multilanguage support installed. You should have Finnish (or Swedish) and
Russian languages installed. Taskbar input language switch should be visible
and working (assuming Finnish set as default). The following instructions
should work for Windows 2000 beta 3 and Windows 9x, setup for Windows NT4
version is similar.
- Download the layout file appropriate for your MS
Windows version.
- Windows 9x :
- Reboot.
- Go to Control Panel, Keyboard, on tab named Language select Russian in
the list, click Properties button. Ensure that Russian is
selected as Keyboard layout also. If not, select, reboot and return back
here. Press Cancel and close the tab dialog. Important: do NOT try to
switch into Russian until next reboot!
- Open File Manager, go to Windows system directory and make a backup of original
kbdru.kbd system file.
Now replace this layout file with the downloaded one.
- Reboot.
- Now open any text editor which does support
multiple languages (such as WordPad, Word, etc.), switch to Russian and just
start typing! Done.
- Windows 2000 :
- Go to Control Panel, Keyboard, on tab named Input Locales select Russian in Installed Input Locales list, click Properties
button. For Keyboard layout/IME select anything except Russian,
for example, choose Russian (Typewriter). Click Apply or OK to
commit. This should release the default Russian layout for replacing.
- Open File Manager, go to Windows system32 directory and make a backup of original kbdru.dll
system file.
Before renaming this file, delete copy of kbdru.dll file from the
Windows system32\dllcache compressed system directory if exists.
After that, rename the file from system32 directory.
Windows 2000 smart recovery agent would see that the system file was
changed, System File Protection Error notice will popup and after
confirmation you should see the recovery prompt named Insert Disk. The dialog will
ask to install Windows 2000 Setup
CD. Do NOT put the setup disk into the drive and choose Cancel button
instead.
- After the original system file is renamed, copy the downloaded layout file
in the same directory.
- Go back to the Input Locales and set Russian as the keyboard layout
for Russian language. Click OK. Now open any text editor which does support
multiple languages (such as WordPad, Word, etc.), switch to Russian and just
start typing!
- If you get the second dialog prompting to insert
the Windows CD after while, just click Cancel again. Done.
