  1. Basics:
    Q: What is chat.app?
    A: chat.app is web browser based chat application using modern web techniques.
    Q: Where did idea come from?
    A: I have been trying out Ajax things and when I came accross mailinator I thought it would be nice to mix those ideas and have same kind of 'instant' chat service.
    Q: Are there other Ajax based chat services?
    A: I've found at least one, XHTML live Chat by alexander kohlhofer.
    Q: Is there chat.app server?
    A: Not really. There is just one simple "server.php".
  2. Functionality:
    Q: How do I send URL thru chat.app?
    A: Just write that URL to broadcast box, separated by whitespaces from rest of your message and that should do it.
    Q: What URLs chat.app accept?
    A: Accepted urls are: http, https, ftp, file and mailto.
    Q: How long names I can use?
    A: Maximum length for 'user' and 'channel' are 30 characters.
    Q: How can I follow multiple channels?
    A: Use multiple browser windows, each following a different channel.
    Q: How can I invite friends to chat.app?
    A: Send them email. And add link to chat.app with channel info:
    Q: Can I bookmark a channel?
    A: Yes, use link with channel and user http://gamma.nic.fi/~jmp/chat/app.html?user@channel in your bookmark
  3. Requirements:
    Q: What does chat.app require?
    A: chat.app requires modern web browser that support web standards. Essential requirements are XHTML, Javascript, CSS and XMLHttpRequest.
    Q: Do I have to install something?
    A1: No, if you have a modern web browser.
    A2: Yes, a modern web browser.
    Q: What browsers are supported?
    A1: Actually there is no real support on any browser.
    A2: I've been told that following browsers seems to be working:
    • Firefox
    • Mozilla
    • Safari
    • IE6
  4. Security:
    Q: Is chat.app secure?
    A: Absolutely not! Anyone who is listening/watching a channel can see what is going on. There is no security build in chat.app.
    Q: Can I send sensitive information thru chat.app?
    A: Of course you can, it is a free world. But I would highly advise against doing such things! Anyone can be watching!
    Q: Do you save chats somewhere?
    A1: Yes, a very short while.
    A2: No, there is no database or logs where those messages are stored.
    Q: How long does chat.app store messages?
    A: Very short time (currently about 98 seconds). More likely those messages are stored longer in your web browser view.
