The
newest book for all becoming fathers in Finland was born in 2002.
A new book about water birth: Published
in April 1998, my book Vesi Kannattaa- vesi raskauden ja synnytyksen
helpottajana has hit the records as the best selling book about Finnish water birth.
(Being the only one!) You can ask for the book from any well equipped book store around
the world. Well, just asking won't at least hurt anybody.
Do you remember me? We might have met over
the years somewhere. Did you get bored and home sick as an exchange student in Mac
Arthur High School in Irving, Texas 1978-79? Renate Ingulfsen and Carla Sanborn, please
contact me if you ever find this site! And the wonderful people I met while staying in
London spring 1997 - it would be nice to hear from you also.
Tööttö I have produced
hand-painted dolls, pillows etc. under my company called 'Tööttö' since 1989 (see the
horn the crocodile is blowing, that's a tööttö).
. With a similar technique I made pictures to my four stories about a fox
called Pulmu. Finnish TV2 filmed the adventures and broadcasted them in the infamous
program series for children 'Pikku Kakkonen'. The production was directed by Seppo
Rustanius and Matti Pellonpää read the story
Dancing and singing I was a dancing teacher for children in
Taru Arho's school of modern dance during 1992-1994. After Taru closed down it has been
really hard to find a dancing school suited for my "dimensions". When not
heavily pregnant or with a new-born , I stomp along in an afro-dance group once a week. I
have also run music schools for babies and parents for many years. I'm still a serious
Beatlemaniac but over the years many other kinds of music has caught me hooked as well -
remembering Eppu Normaali, Bessie Smith and early medieval church singing. 'Tuomas-messu', a musical church service is close to my
heart, and the times I manage to attend I get extra boost to my housewife-life.
The
celebration of birth With my first homebirth in 1994
I got familiar with the ideas of natural childbirth. I was excited to learn that the state
of the mother and the foetus can be improved so significantly with so simple little
things. Things that seem to have been lost somewhere along the way when childbirth was
hospitalised. After Vilho was born I have been an active member in the Finnish Active
Birth society. When we stayed in London early 1997 I got the opportunity to meet and have
discussions with the "gurus" in water birth: Janet Balaskas, Michael Odent,
Sheila Kitzinger and Dianne Garland. I have also visited many advanced birth clinics in
England, Iceland and Finland. In Tampere I started together with midwife Marja-Leena Harju
a birth training programme in the Tampere University Hospital. This was run for two years.
In addition I have worked as a doula a number of times, an assistant to a mother giving
birth. This has been challenging but also rewarding.
At home The days of a mother are packed with
things to do.
Although I love staying at home, I also love parties every now and now. I enjoy life which
is a mixture of wellington boots and high heeled shoes. The boots are at hand - no,feet -
when I try to get something ripped out from the hard muddy soil in my garden. Sometimes I
even manage to get carrots or reddishes (in the picture) but mostly it's just weeds! I
seldom use high heel shoes while baking bread. We have a large wood-heated oven which can
bake eight loafs of bread at a time.
