in a product of the Finnish Automobile Sport Federation´s Coaching Team, having been a
member since 1997. His first competition was a rallysprint in 1993 in the
Toyota Starlet and the first rally was in January 1994 in the Ford Escort
RS 2000. At the end of 1994 his father helped him buy a Group A Lancia
Delta, which he used for a couple of years in the Finnish rallies.
By 1996 he had gained his international licence and bought from Sweden a Group A Opel Kadett, which was then used for the Finnish championship. After rolling that car it was replaced by a Group A Opel Astra and he drove that for almost one year. After the end of the winter rallies in 1997, he bought a Group N Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution III. That was the start of a series of different Mitsubishis and with the help of Finnish Mitsubishi importer he won his first title, the national Group N champion in 1999. One-off drive in a private Ford Escort WRC yielded an impressive 8th overall in Rally Finland 1999 and for the season 2000 he got a golden opportunity with a full-time drive in Toyota Corolla WRC including some world series outings. In Rally Great Britain he surprised the whole rallying world when he was leading the rally after the first stage. For the season 2001 his main goal was to achieve Finnish Championship title and he took it. In 2002 he drove a Citroen Saxo in the Junior World Rally Championship and selected rounds of the series with the World Rally Car. In Sweden he was fifth fastest over the special stages with the privateer Ford Focus RS WRC. Strategic road penalties leaving the last service dropped him to seventh, handing Colin McRae and Ford´s works team points. In the Acropolis Rally he made a little bit of Finnish rally history being the first Finn to win the Junior category. He was very competitive on gravel events, but on the tarmac it was very difficult and he ended up in third position in the Junior World Rally Championship series. In 2003 he placed second in the Finnish Championship in a Focus RS WRC02 and finished seventh in Rally Finland taking his first ever World Rally Championship points. In
Sweden 2004 Ford Motor Company Ltd nominated Tuohino to score
manufacturers’ championship points on the event and,
on his debut appearance with the official Ford team
and in a Focus RS WRC03, he
took
a well-deserved fourth place overall beating many regular works drivers. He
impressed also in limited
outings in a privateer Focus taking top eight places in Cyprus, Greece and
Turkey. In Rally Finland he was again behind the wheel of the works Focus
and he took the fifth place.
For the season
2005 he made a contract with Skoda sharing
team´s second works car in gravel events with fellow Finn Jani
Paasonen. |
