"Standard model" hut in Tuiskukuru in Saariselkä

In the Finnish national parks and hiking areas there is more than two hundreds wilderness huts. They are usually maintained and they fit for winter habitation. The huts are equipped with stove and firewood and often with gas stove too.

Most of the wilderness huts are free and open for hikers. The huts are usually intended to stay overnight but only one night at time. "Day huts" are for rest in short trips but not to stay overnight. There are also locked and chargeable huts. To these huts one can reserve bed for couple of nights. The 40 - 60 FIM fee entitles to stay overnight but there can be several other hikers in the hut too. *

Equipment and models of wilderness huts

Furniture and equipment

There are usually bunks, table and couple of benches in the huts. Repaired huts are tidy and in those huts furniture and floor can be even varnished. In some huts there can be few mattresses. For fetching and keeping water there is a bucket and a dipper. For cleaning there is a brush and a dust pan. Above the stove there is a rack for drying clothes.

On the table there is usually candles and matches left by hikers. "The hut book" (=guest book) is an important equipment too. Hikers visiting hut write their names and places where they are coming from and going to to the book. Some huts have a book including information and advice about using huts, garbage disposal etc. Outside the hut there is usually a shovel and a brush.

There is also some saunas for hikers in the wilderness. In Saariselkä area there is several saunas but in the käsivarsi area none. In Ounas-Pallas national park there is a sauna in Hannukuru. Saunas are in satisfactory condition.

Heating and fuels

Almost every hut is equipped with a Upo stove. Some huts have another type of stove and in some older huts there is a fireplace made out of natural stones. In many huts there is a gas stove too. Firewood is stored in a separate woodshed. Firewood is one meter long logs which hikers can saw and chop with the tools in the woodshed. The saws and axes are usually in fair good condition. The firewood is dry pine (or sometimes birch).

Garbage disposal

There is a dike (toilet) in a separate building or sometimes it is build in connection with woodshed. The most popular huts have separate outhouses for males and females. For incombustible garbage there is garbage can outside the hut. Part of the huts are outside the garbage disposal. Then hikers have to take their own garbage themselves out of the wilderness (this is the way how a considerate hiker acts every time).

Construction and models of the huts

The wilderness huts are log huts. There is usually chargeable and free huts in the same building separated with inner wall. There is different kinds of huts but especially in Saariselkä area many of the huts have the same layout.  These I call "standard model huts".

Rules and instruction for using the huts

The wilderness huts are freely in hikers use but only one night at time. Huts and their environment must be kept clean. One very important rule is to leave at least as much firewood in the hut as there was when the hiker came. It is very considerate habit before leaving the hut to carve wood chips which the next hikers can use to light a fire. Ashes should be taken away from the stove when needed.

Firewood should be used economically. The valve of the gas bottle must be closed when leaving the hut. Also the water bucket must be emptied when leaving the hut (otherwise the water will freeze when the hut is left unheated).
Rucksacks are kept outside the hut because otherwise it would be crowded inside. Naturally if there is only couple of hikers staying in the hut rucksacks can be taken inside.

On the wall nearby the stove there is vent which should be opened when drying clothes or making food. In this way clothes will dry better. The vent can be closed before night and it should be closed when leaving the hut.
Old rule tells that there should be room for the hiker who comes lastly. If the hut is crowded hikers who have came earlier should give their places and move even outside to stay overnight. (So the probably most tired hikers can have good possibility to rest.)

Formerly the hut was used by border guards but now it is open for hikers. It is situated to the east from Kiellajoki river near the place where Stuorraäytsi river merges Kiellajoki. The hut is about 0,5 km to the east from the river on the west side of a small pond behind a hill. Accommodation room for 4-5 persons. A stove. A small store of firewood is in the hall. To the left from the door there is the stove and to the right a table in front of the window. On the rear wall is the bunk in one level with two mattresses. The hut was fair tidy when I visited it with Seppo 5.8.1999.
