In the Finnish national parks and hiking areas there is more than two
hundreds wilderness huts. They are usually maintained and they fit for
winter habitation. The huts are equipped with stove and firewood and often
with gas stove too.
Most of the wilderness huts are free and open for hikers. The huts
are usually intended to stay overnight but only one night at time. "Day
huts" are for rest in short trips but not to stay overnight. There are
also locked and chargeable huts. To these huts one can reserve bed for
couple of nights. The 40 - 60 FIM fee entitles to stay overnight but there
can be several other hikers in the hut too. *
On the table there is usually candles and matches left by hikers. "The hut book" (=guest book) is an important equipment too. Hikers visiting hut write their names and places where they are coming from and going to to the book. Some huts have a book including information and advice about using huts, garbage disposal etc. Outside the hut there is usually a shovel and a brush.
There is also some saunas for hikers in the wilderness. In Saariselkä
area there is several saunas but in the käsivarsi area none. In Ounas-Pallas
national park there is a
sauna in Hannukuru. Saunas are in satisfactory condition.
Firewood should be used economically. The valve of the gas bottle must
be closed when leaving the hut. Also the water bucket must be emptied when
leaving the hut (otherwise the water will freeze when the hut is left unheated).
Rucksacks are kept outside the hut because otherwise it would be crowded
inside. Naturally if there is only couple of hikers staying in the hut
rucksacks can be taken inside.
On the wall nearby the stove there is vent which should be opened when
drying clothes or making food. In this way clothes will dry better. The
vent can be closed before night and it should be closed when leaving the
hut.
Old rule tells that there should be room for the hiker who comes lastly.
If the hut is crowded hikers who have came earlier should give their places
and move even outside to stay overnight. (So the probably most tired hikers
can have good possibility to rest.)

The first pause in my first hiking trip 3.4.1992 at 15.40 - 16.00.
Standard model hut in forest terrain. The first staying overnight in hiking trip 3-4.4.1992.
Entrance to the hut is in the end wall. Water is available from nearby streaming Suomujoki river. The hut is fair cool after cold nights. I took a sauna bath and stayed overnight with Seppo and another hiker 13.-14.4.1998.
Standard model hut. Water is availeble from lower streaming Suomujoki river. I stayed overnight 9.-.10.4.1992 and 18.-19.4.1998.
The hut is on a high hill in a nice place. Entrance to the hut is in on west wall where is a terrace. In the wilderness hut there is bunks in two levels exceptionally on the side wall. There is a window in the end wall and a table in front of it. In the east side wall there is a window too. The water in the pond east from the hut is not good for drinking in wintertime; it tastes musty. I stayed overnight with Seppo 14.-15.4.1998.
I stayed overnight with Seppo and Juha 4.-5.4.1992. After this the hut has been moved and rebuild to a new place.
Standard model hut where I stayed overnight with Seppo, Juha, Mika, Patrick and couple of other hikers 5.-6.4.1992.
Special and fine hut which is build out of massive logs. Entrance to the hut is in the end wall where is a terrace too. Inside there is first fairy narrow room which acts nowadays function of hall. However, in the rear of the room there is a cooker which is not used anymore. Inside the hut there is a big fireplace which is made out of natural stones. Beside the fireplace there is a Upo stove. In front of the window there is a table and benches made out of coarse blocks. On the rear wall bunks with mattresses in two levels.
Steep stairs lead down to the river shore where is a small sauna which is nowadays slightly in poor shape. We took a sauna bath and stayed overnight 5.-6.4.1992 and 15.-16.1998. In 1992 the hut was crowded with hikers but 1998 I was alone with Seppo and before us the hut had been empty for couple of days.
Standard model hut in fairly open terrain about 100 m from Tuiskujoki where is a small bridge. We stopped for a lunch break in hiking trips 1992 (9.4.) and 1998 (18.4.).
The hut is the newest in the Saariselkä area (build 1991). Almost standard model hut but as I can remember the stove was in the middle of the floor and as a speciality there is a separate room for drying clothes. Ashore the lake there is a sauna. I stayed overnight with Seppo, Juha, Mika, Patrick and couple of other hikers 8.-9.4. 1992.
In 1992 (7.-8.4.) we stayed overnight in the crowded hut. During the second visit 31.3.-1-4.1994 the hut was half-empty. Water can be found even in winter in Hammasjoki. The unfrozen place is approximately 100 m away from the hut.
The hut is tidy and light. There is a big window in the west wall of the hut and also in the rear wall above the bunk there is a small window. Entrance to the hut is in the end wall through a small hall. The furnishing is fair new because the hut has been moved some years ago from Luulampi. There is bunks in one level and the bunk is slanting towards the door. I stayed overnight with Seppo 17.-18.4.1998. In winter it is hard to get water. The ice in Luirojoki is very thick near the hut. About 300 m downstream water is available even in winter according to the "hut book".
Steep stairs lead from the river shore to the hut. The hut is like the one in Porttikoski but sauna is rebuild to be a kitchen corner. Inner wall between the hut and sauna is pulled down and doorway to the hall is closed. The stove is bigger than the normal Upo stove. I stopped for a pause with Seppo and Mika 30.3.1994. In 16.-17.4.1998 I stayed overnight with Seppo and another hiker. Bunk is in one level but there was two matresses.
Small but warm hut. In the end wall there is a window and a table in front of it. The Bunks are in two level and there is couple of mattresses too. Tyyroja brook streams in front of the sauna and the hut. The sauna is quite small and in good shape but there is no dressing-room or hall in the sauna. The big hut which is made out of massive logs is in a not dense forest. The stove is made out of a split barrel. On the rear and right side wall there is bunk in one level. Near the hut there is another building where is a sauna which seems to be in poor shape. There is no woodshed; the pile of firewood is behind the hut. I stayed overnight with Seppo and Mika 1.-2.4.1994.
The hut is build out of planed logs and it has been only for a short time as a wilderness hut. On the rear wall there is almost real beds with mattresses. There is no water available in winter. Water must be melted out of snow. I stayed overnight with Seppo and Mika 27.-28.3.1994.
