We arrived at Rovaniemi by train at 7.40 and continued from there by
bus at 8.00. We were in Kiilopää hiking centre at noon. After
lunch we started skiing at 13.00. It was cloudy but dry weather and the
temperature was -5°C. At Rautulampi
we stopped for a pause at 15.40 - 16.00. We came to Lankojärvi
hut at 17.50. We ate pea soup for dinner. There was no other hikers
staying overnight in the hut.
4.4.
In the morning the temperature was -6°C and it was snowing lightly.
In the afternoon the weather cleared up gradually. We were on the skiing
track again at 10.15. We skied upwards by Tammukkaoja brook. The snow was
soft and hard to ski. On the foot of Juromapään fjell we ate
a light lunch. After that we climbed almost to the summit of Lupukkapää
fjell. We skied across Maantiekuru ravine and via Sudenpesä hut to
Sarvioja. We arrived in the hut at 18.40.
We ate mashed potatoes and meat balls.
5.4.
We left Sarvioja already at 9.45. The weather was sunny and it was
few degrees below zero. We climbed up to Paratiisikuru
("Paradise gorge") where we stopped for a lunch break. At Pirunportti ("Devils
gate") we met Mika and Patrick. We left rucksacks at Pirunportti
and climbed to the summit of Ukselmapää fjell. After fetching
rucksacks we skied downhill to Muorravaarakanruoktu
hut. There we made a meal out of macaroni and sausage. In the evening
we skied towards Lumikuru ("Snow gorge") where we met again Mika and Patrick.
6.4.
In the morning we ate porridge with Mika and Patrick. We were on the
skiing track again at 10.55. During the day we left rucksacks and climbed
to Muorravaarakan Purnuvaara fjell. We continued
skiing by Kaarreoja brook to Anterinmukka
hut. We ate and took a sauna bath. The hut was crowded but there was space
for everyone on the bunks. On the upper bunk it was warm and there was
soft mattresses.
7.4.
We were on the skis not until at 11.30. It was -4°C and cloudy
weather. The sun was near the edge of a cloud but it stayed behind the
cloud. Mika and Patrick left us and headed for Siulanruoktu
via Vongoiva kammi (=peat shelter). We heard and saw a reindeer with a
bell around its neck. We skied past Keinopää fjell to Hammaskuru.
It started snowing lightly. We arrived in Hammaskuru
hut already at 15.00. In the evening we made a skiing trip to Hammaskuru
kammi and Kirakkavaara hill where was a light whirl. There was 12 persons
staying overnight in the wilderness hut.
8.4.
In the morning it was clear and the temperature was -12°C. We started
skiing already at 9.30. At the noon we made a campfire and fried sausage.
It was cloudy and almost calm. We climbed with rucksacks to the summit
of Sokosti, where we were at 15. We came to the new hut of Luiro at
half past four. We cooked mashed potatoes and bacon. We took a sauna
bath in the big sauna. Mika and Patrick were very tired when they came
at half past seven. The hut was warm and I slept quite well.
9.4.
The sun peeked in the morning but then it was snowing lightly for a
while. At 9.35 we started skiing. We skied past Ampupää
fjell to Tuiskukuru hut. There we ate at
noon a good lunch. The weather got warmer and it was approximately 0°C.
The skis glided badly in Tuiskukuru ravine. It was almost calm and it was
snowing now and then. We met again Mika and Patrick in the crossing of
Suomujoki river and Vintiläkuru ravine at four. At Suomunruoktu
hut we were before six. In the evening we visited the museum hut nearby.
We tried to ski telemark in a small slope. Then we made a camp fire, fried
sausage drank coffee.
10.4.
We were on the skis at 9.37. It was below zero and almost calm. The
track was good but the skis didn't glide well. We stopped for one pause
and arrived at Kiilopää at 12.10.
